Ok, I tried. I really did. I watched the Bills first pre-season game last week and I just can’t do it anymore. I know it is just pre-season, but it was just pre-season last year when they looked awful and finished 7-9 during the season. Our rookie left guard got picked up and thrown into Trent Edwards by one of the Titans’ pass rushers. Does that sound like a team ready to regain its place in the NFL elite? I love football so I will watch the NFL constantly this season. But I refuse to put stock into hoping that the Bills accomplish anything this season.
So where does that leave me? The same place it has left me since they started play in 1970, with the Buffalo Sabres. I cannot wait for the season to start, I cannot wait to see the new players slamming opposing forwards into the boards, and I cannot wait to see Vanek light up the goal light 50 times or more this season. Of course, the Sabres have just as much chance at being terrible and disappointing as the Bills. But with the Sabres I can forgive because I live for hockey. With the Sabres it is ok because they are not playing home games on a regular basis in Rochester. They had one home game in Rochester during the regular season, that was it. The owner of the Sabres is not blasting the WNY economy making us feel worse than we already do. Ok, well B Thomas did move to Florida to escape the NYS government. But he didn’t thumb his nose at us. I forgive the Sabres because they didn’t hold a financial gun to the community’s head to build their new arena. Ralph hasn’t paid for any of the upgrades to his stadium, we paid for it. The Sabres are still paying off the loans from the construction of HSBC.
My emotional attachment to the Sabres goes deep. The Sabres are one of my first memories as a kid. So I will watch the Bills fumble around until the Sabres start, and when the Sabres are going there is a whole new priority list in my house.
